Scenes from Korčula - Cathedral

ST MARK'S CATHEDRAL
This is the largest church in the city, oriented in the ease-west peninsula, on the main city square, where a small church used to stand dedicated to the Virgin.
The new church was built for two reasons: the Korčula Bishopric was founded at the beginning of the 14th century, and this was a time of economic prosperity thanks primarily to the flourishing of stone carving at the end of that century.
This mighty building is firmly "anchored" on the main square, its high bell tower symbolising the centre of the city and forming its urban and architectural focus. During later centuries small changes were made to the church architecture, mostly in the late-Baroque style. Most of the changes clashed with the Gothic-Rennaissance building, and restoration carried out in the second half of the 20th century gave the cathedral back part of its original appearance.
