Scenes from Korčula - Tower of the South Land Gate
The square Tower of the South Land Gate (Veliki Revelin) is adornerd with the Venetian arms, the arms of Korčula Governors Barbaro and Loredan, and the arms of the Venetian Doge Mocenigo. In 1925 a memorial plaque was placed on it to mark the thousandth anniversary of the coronation of the first Croatian King Tomislav.
The tower was built in the 13th century, and later added to. It is accessed by a stone stairway-bridge made in 1863 to replace an older ruinous one. Originally there had been a wooden medieval drawbridge to that place. The extant part of the town walls stretch to the west of this tower.
